9 Easy Ways to Identify and Follow Your Passion

All great leaders, thinkers, speakers and motivators have one thing in common, PASSION.

find your passion; guide to finding your passion; live your passion; find your purpose; find your best life; live your best life

Passion is the path to abundance.  The only way to be great is to live with passion.

“The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” Steve Jobs

Identify your passion

Do you want to find your purpose in life?  Well, you have a gift.  What is your gift?  It may be an apparent talent or some characteristic you may not even see as a gift.  It’s just something innate to you.  It’s part of who you are. We all have unique personal gifts and these gifts are inherently aligned with our passions. Passion is felt when something truly feels good for all the right reasons.  It resonates with who you are and there is internal joy in the journey and/or the outcome.  So, what are you passionate about?

To identify your passion(s), ask yourself the following:

  1. What did you want to be when you were young?  Why were you interested in that job/lifestyle?  Look into the parts of that job that really attracted you to it and see if you are doing any of that now in any way in your daily life.  Our desires when we were young can truly speak to our innate passions.
  2. What are the three things that you absolutely enjoy doing?  And they can be reading (what genre? Why?), helping causes (What causes really pull at your heartstrings? Why?), writing, engaging in certain conversations (who do you like to engage with the most?), a task/activity/thought pattern, etc..  Write down whatever immediately comes to mind and feels right.
  3. What activities (topics, tasks, conversations) cause you to lose track of time?  “Time flies when you are having fun!”  What are you engaged in when time seems to fly by?  Why do you find those activities intriguing?
  4. What do you wish you could do?  Why?  How will it help you/others? Everything we choose to do, has a root in a passion.  Whether it be a passion to help others or a passion to help ourselves.

“If you feel like there is something out there that you’re supposed to be doing, if you have a passion for it, then stop wishing and just do it.” Wanda Sykes

find your purpose; live your purpose; follow your heart; be passionate; live your passion; dwell in your passion

Follow your passion

Make your day-to-day more enjoyable by following what feels right and you will follow your passion.  The following tips will help you consciously do more of what you love on a daily basis.

“Nothing is really work unless you would rather be doing something else.” James Barrie (creator of Peter Pan)

  1. Before every task you do, every conversation you have, ask yourself if your heart is truly in it.  If the answer is a quick yes, than go for it!  If you are not feeling invested in it, though, think about what changes you can make to not be involved in it or, if it is a necessary task, alter your perspective in such a way that makes it as enjoyable as possible.
  2. Follow the path of least resistance.  Make a list of the tasks you need to do for the day.  Throughout your daily activities, keep asking yourself what activity you should do next and go through your list, moving forward with the one that feels the best (makes you feel the best when you think about it).
  3. What skill have you always wanted to develop?  Take an online class and try it out.  Make a couple of hours a week for yourself to try/do something you have always wanted to learn/get better at/excel in.
  4. Be true to yourself.  Spend your time in a way that you are proud of so that you will have no regrets.
  5. Stay in the present moment.

“Passion is energy.  Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.” Oprah Winfrey

Our time here is limited.  The people that are the most fulfilled, who feel their lives are overflowing with meaning are those that are doing what they love/enjoy as much as possible.  Pursue your passion and all else will fall into place.

“Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” Harriet Tubman

  1. […] What do you look forward to doing with your time? What was it that got you excited a year ago? 5 years ago?  Make a date with yourself and just go out and f’n do it.  Was it taking a road trip?  Do it.  Was it being with those friends who made you feel real and good?  Go see them.  It doesn’t have to be a long hiatus, but do it.  Do it for yourself and do NOT feel guilty.  You will be a better person (friend, parent, employee, etc.) when you return. Here are some tips to following your passion. […]
